Louisiana Baton Rouge Missionaries March 15, 2020

 Dear Parents of Missionaries,

I am writing you as your missionary’s mission nurse to give you the latest updates about what is going on here in Louisiana and Mississippi.  Your missionaries have been our biggest priority and determining the best actions to take for their safety and health.

Our mission is strictly following guidelines given to us by Prophets and Apostles who not only have directions from the Lord, but have great physicians in charge of the health and well-being of our missionaries.  Please know that we are caring for each of you sons and daughters as if they were our own.  We stress to them that as long as they are obedient to the rules and guidelines they are given, they will receive the extra protection the Lord has promised them as missionaries.

While all of our missionaries have been asked to have a 72 hour kit for emergencies like a hurricane, they have not been asked to store supplies for a pandemic. As we have been able to get information, we have told them to please do this as quickly as possible. If they have difficulty getting what they need, we will look at ways to help them.

I have a list of every missionary that is in a high risk category, as well as secondary issues they have that require on-going medication. These high risk missionaries have been told to update me daily as to their health. If they develop cold or flu symptoms and run a fever over 100 degrees F, We will do what is needed to care for them.

Let me talk a little bit about quarantine.  We don’t expect any missionaries to be quarantined. Higher risk missionaries are being asked to self-isolate. We are also asking for self-isolation if one of the companions is ill.  Self-isolation is a far cry from Quarantine. They won’t be cooped up in their apartment for weeks.  They can go outside. They can go for walks or ride their bikes.  Food, cleaning supplies, and if necessary medicines will be delivered to them, if it becomes necessary. They will be asked to shop early in the morning when the stores are less crowded. Local church members are also available to help with this if it becomes necessary. They will not be performing their duties as normal.  A six-foot space has been asked between all companions and any people they may come in contact with. If they have appointments they are asked to see if anyone in the home has a cold or cough prior to going, and make other arrangements if that is the case. Much work will be done electronically by phone. They will not be giving blessings to the sick. They will not be visiting nursing homes, hospitals, or any elderly that are sick. This will be the job of the individual wards and branches. They will not be having Zone Conference until further notice. They may hold district council in whatever way keeps them safe. If anyone is ill, or in the high risk category, they will not attend in person but join in other ways (electronically).

Please be positive in every way when you communicate with your missionary. Their mental health is as important as their physical health.  It is very important that you support them through this difficult time. If you are feeling fear or anxiety about your missionary, please, please, please to do not share that with them.  It causes them to be over fearful or anxious.  Continue to share your love and confidence in them and in our leaders whom we love and support.  Fill them with confidence and joy at their opportunity to serve the Lord and your knowledge that they will be happy and successful even during this trying time.

We will go to the ends of the earth to keep your children safe and healthy.  Also be aware that they are probably safer here than they would be at home.  Most of them are in small rural town where the outbreak is very unlikely to occur and nearly impossible as long as guidelines are followed. Putting them on an airplane home would actually put them at higher risk of exposure. The Stake Presidents met together today electronically and there are no members affected by the virus at this time. If we keep it that way, we will all be weathering the storm well.

Please listen to President Nelson’s message on the home page of LDS.org.  It is a message of joy and love, and to be faithful during this time.  It is also posted on Facebook.

At the risk of being bombarded by calls, I am giving you all my personal email and phone # so that if you have any specific worries, you can contact me.  If your missionary expresses any worries to you, please feel free to call me or have them call me.

A Whole Blessing 3-9-20

District

Our College Football team

Ahoy y'all. I still be in the Natchez down here yonder. We got the Daniels. Elder Daniels. Hes pretty cool. We've gotten a lot done in a pretty short time. We met a bunch of members real quick and found some people to teach. Our bishop even gave us a referral so the loot is just flowing right now. We even found some members who haven't existed until now. So that's sick. It's been a pretty sweet week though. On transfers I got soaked to the bones. It was raining so hard it soaked through my jacket and through everything. It was a mess. But I'm all good. We've been goin all around and chatting with people. We got to teach a few lessons and meet up with people we haven't seen in a long time. We also have found like 5 people who we could teach real soon so it's been wild. But we've been havin a good time so far. Church was lit as usual. We had district council and all that jazz. You know how it be. Also were gonna go to mass again hahahaha. This Saturday were gonna go and have some more catholic fun. Yeehaa. I hope we get blessed again. Also fun fact in the south: you can use the word blessing as a measurement. It's the most wonderful thing ever hahaha. Like "Put a whole blessing of spice on that." Or you can just say it like "bless some salt and pepper on my gumbo." Try it out it's fun. But uhh. Yeah. I'm doing good though. Elder Daniels is cool. The Natchez iz cool. The ward is cool. The works cool. The crazy southerners are still missing teeth. And God is good all the time. But uhh. Yeah that's about it. Gotta blast.

Mardi Gra Parade
Transfers are tomorrow so that's kind crazy. Elder Thompson is gonna be goin sadly. I was completely expecting for me to leave but I'm staying surprisingly. So pretty bummed hes goin. My new comp will be elder Daniels. I know nothing about this man. So this'll be fun. But uhh. Yeah. This'll be my 4th transfer in Natchez. Pretty wild. We've got a few pretty cool people that we've met and we've been our lookin for inactive members and such. It's been really good. I'm not excited to have to leave eventually so. The mission has been pretty sweet. I'm a man now. Most of the time. As long as my mom says I'm handsome I think I'll be alright. Last week we went on exchanges in pineville and we was bikin. It was lit. But there was this dude who was in the military and he had some of the craziest and wack stories I done ever heard. But he was like talkin to me a lot trying to convince me to join the navy and this and that. And I was like "oh but I dont think I could ever become a navy seal." And he was like "well you already have the build for one." And that just confirmed that I'm huge. Anyways. Idk if I'll join the military but ya never know. Haha. But uhhh. Yeah. It's been pretty normal for the most part. Just southern people being wack. Like this one guy walked up to us at Walmart. Keep in mind we had just walked in and started in the closest isle which was the frozen food. But anyways. We found some meal things for like a dollar and we were like heck yeah. And this guy walked up and was like. "Man y'all need to learn how to cook." And we were like what. And he continued to tell us that we need to learn how to boil water and to buy a cookbook and to make sure that we buy a gas station cook book because they have more basic meals. "Even though I know you all went to BYU and are smart" like what. We've made quite a few things. Like he thought we couldn't boil water! Spaghetti is so easy to make and he was trying to make it sound like it was what all the pro chefs are doin. So. That's somethin. But. The Catholics still love us. The members say they love us. And the people we teach are still not tech savvy enough to reply. So overall. Pretty good. I got a whole entire boatload of pictures for yall too. Well. Idk we'll see. Alrighty. I'll try to remember to write an email next time haha. Gotta blast.

Now I know y'all be skipping the Isaiah chapters but they're freakin cool. I really like the way he explains things. Theres a member here who knows freakin everything I guess but hes told us how the culture was and it makes a lot more sense. Super awesome. So we gotta make our fires bright and show the world our light.

I'm back!

Ahoy y'all I'm back. Sorry I haven't written in a fat while. Life's been freakin wack for the past week to say the least. I don't remember what the last thing I wrote was so I'm just gonna kinda go backwards I guess. Sorta. Kinda. Anyways. So. Since last Thursday our apartments power has been out. And I have had a wicked cold that has been killing me slowly but surely. So if I die...I blame the rain. And also everyone else being sick. But we've been living g out of our suitcases for a whole week and I'm dying. So it's been super stressful. We first stayed in a members BnB which was super nice. And we'd go check to see if they got the power back on. Cuz problems happened and I guess the church wasn't getting the bill for our power so they cut it off. But we checked everyday and it never came back on but we had p-day and exchanges in Alexandria so that should have been more than enough time. They told us it would be back on Monday. And we had p-day to Wednesday to give them enough time. Anyways. Exchanges were cool. We met a minister lady who told me to start my own church and I was like uhhh no. But she was super cool and me and Elder Tauraa told her about what we do and what we believe and such. It was cool. I guess I'm low key buff as junk cuz people keep asking if I played football all the time. All them push-ups are finally paying off hehehe. Anyways. Later us, the Alexandria elders and the sisters all went to a food bank and like assembly lined all this food into bags and it was super fun haha. Also we ate with a member and I blew their kids mind by telling them that sand is called sand because it's in between the sea and the land. He'll never be the same. Jk. Maybe. Anyways. We had district council which is always sweet. We visited julie on the way back home and she is doing way better. Shes really interested in coming to church and the gospel and such. She prayed before we left and it was way good. But sadly the good times came to an end when we came back to find our apartment still had no power. A little bummed about that. I'm still sick and so is everyone and their dog. It's just been rough living out of my carry on bag. But I'm alive so. God is good all the time.
Zone Conference

Anyways. Before all this we had zone conference and stuff and that was really good. We had another pure testimony type of thing like we did when I first came out. Freakin awesome. The spirit is always crazy strong during pure testimonies. It was super good. I haven't been eating as much because I've been sick and stuff but somehow I'm still rockin a solid 176 pounds of absolute manliness. The south makes you strong, either in fat or in faith. Luckily its not all fat for me. So sorry again that I haven't written an email. It's been a pretty wild few weeks. Hopefully I get better soon and everything goes back to normal. Also I hope everyone else gets better cuz literally like everyone is sick. Oh hey I hit 11 months too. 2-13. Yeeyeeyeeyeyeyeye. Almost a year. Kinda wack. Um. But yeah. Wild times. Also idk if I even told y'all about how we went to WAYSIDE LIGHTHOUSE LOVE AND HOLINESS hahahahah. We went to the bible study. Holy cow it was crazy. They spoke in tongues and everything. It was awesome. We were the only white people there. So cool. I don't thing I could honestly describe how that experience was. You'll have to ask me in person someday. It was like a black Baptist church that believed in Pentecostal beliefs but also some really random things too. The preacher lady told me she anointed her car with oil and commanded it to go in reverse cuz it wouldn't... and after 3 tries it worked I guess. These people sure are fun huh? Anyways. Thats all for now. Keep spankin with the spirit.P

13 And out of weakness he shall be made strong, in that day when my work shall commence among all my people, unto the restoring thee, O house of Israel, saith the Lord.

Joseph smith. Freakin cool. Also saints 2 is out on gospel library and I'm stoked.

Wayside Lighthouse Love and Holiness

Amen everyone. I'm still alive in Natchez. Um. We had the um. Uhhh. Transfers. Were staying for a third. Which is pretty sweet. We lost 3 of the elders in the district though. Very sad. But we got some new punks in here so we'll see if they're cool or not. My memory is absolutely garbage and I have no idea what I've done the past like month. But that's okay. Cuz we found a dude who was a lady's son who we were tryna visit. And he's a minister. (Uh oh) He's mega wacko like they all are haha. But hes cool so its okay. When we first met him and were talkin to him it was super weird. He just went off on how we're all ministers and we need to blah blah blah. He wasn't mean or anything. It was just like...a pentecostal sermon where they're just yelling stuff and gettin wild. He was pretty chill though. Just like would not let us get a word in. But I destroyed him with the BOM mwaahahahahah. Jk. I just whipped out the story of Ammon cuz something he said reminded me of it and then he was like woah. Teach me more about this mormon book. And we got em. Anyways. We were gonna go to a bible study at his church. The wayside lighthouse love and holiness nondenominational church. Somethin else huh? But when we put it into our maps it couldn't find it! It was so dumb haha. We tried a bunch of times. We even called his mom and she was like. "Oh its uh west side life or something." And that didnt help at all. So we ended up not making it. But were goin this week. So it'll be good. We visited him again and apparently he looked up stuff on the internet as all these fruitcakes seem to do. BUT. luckily he found a video that talked about Joseph smith seeing heavenly father and Jesus Christ. Nothing anti I'm pretty sure. So we just explained like what the BOM is like 12 times cuz he kept thinking that it's just a remake of the king james bible. Like I read a scripture and he was like I remember that in the king James version. And I was like ...its not in the bible. And he got major confused. Anyways long story short hes slowly but surely learning. As are all our people. These southerners sure have a lot of faith but man they sure is dumb sometimes. Or just believe in false truths. Cuz that'll do it. And that's the hardest part is teaching them stuff and then they go and ask their preacher and he'll say to stay away from us. And junk like that. But it's fun anyways. The members are all super awesome. We still got all those Catholics who like us for some reason. Were living right next to the Mississippi river. It's a good time. Um. Yeah. Alright gotta blast.

Ps scripture time: Galatians 3: 26-29

26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

It's like 2 nephi 26:33. We're all children of God.

Blessed

Howdy y'all. Things be good down here. Alrighty.

Okay so uh. Idk what happened. But we did get blessed by a catholic priest. And that's been the highlight of my week. But we've been having a good time. We found some people to teach and such. You know how it is. This one lady idk if I said. But we were going to see someone else and she waved us over and we were like uhh what. And she was on the phone so we sat there for a while but she was like gesturing for us to wait and stuff. Dang southerners. But anyways she got off the phone and turns out she was taught by missionaries like years ago and said she loved having them come over like several times a week. They helped her move and she cane to church a bunch too. The members even remember her. So it was wild how we just bumped into her. But uhh. We got to help mark some more the veteran man. And such. We went to church with him also... catholic mass is somethin else. And I thought the pentecostals were weird hahahaha. But it's the oldest church in Mississippi the st mary basilica. Its freakin wild lookin. All these statues staring at you. Anyway. We went to the actual saturday mass and man. Turns out the were taking communion. By the way I had no idea what was going on the whole time. Like they had a handbook to tell you what to do and say but man I couldnt keep up. First it was page 6 then you had to go to 105 then you had to go to 62 but it didnt say to do that. So I was just confused on what was happening and the priest man wasnt making much sense and like jeez. Anyways mark leaned over to me and was like you can either stay in the pew or go up, cross your arms, and get a blessing from the priest. And at that moment I was like oh yeah I'm getting a blessing. So we stood up with our pew and junk and man. There had to be a few hundred people in there. And here we are 2 "mormon" missionaries walking up to take communion with our nametags blazing. I felt no fear. But we were getting the funniest looks hahaha. But there was a big line where people would walk up and then take the cracker things and when we got up there I just threw my arms up and did the black panther wakanda forever sign. And the priest made a face like "oh boy" and I made a straight face smile so it was quite the moment. But he gave me a lil blessing and then elder Thompson. Turns out we were the only heathens in there that day cuz no one else crossed their arms. I saw a lady pound the wine back though. That was a sight to behold. Anyways. Going to other churches just reaffirms my testimony in the true church. Nothing else makes sense. And they say our church is weird hahahahahah. Let me tell ya it's the most normal one out there. But yeah. We went to our own church Sunday and it was very nice. I made funeral potatoes for the members and they really liked it. So now they're going to make me cook next week I guess idk. We'll see. But pday. Oh boy. The pineville elders tricked me into eating sugar free haribo gummy bears. I thought they were normal gummy bears. But a few hours later I was dying in the bathroom. The Amazon reviews do not lie. I was dying. This past week has been a wild one. Idk if this coming week will be as eventful. So. Keep your pants on I'll email you next week.

Ps scripture time: Alma 7:23

23 And now I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; asking for whatsoever things ye stand in need, both spiritual and temporal; always returning thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive.

Happy new year.

So uh we didnt do anything real special for new years. I went to bed on time haha. But it feels like we had ri wait a long time for pday. Cuz we had pday on christmas eve and then on new years. But this next week pday will be back to normal. We had district council right after christmas and uh yeah. We counciled and such. We went to the VFW and helped the veteran peoples and I built a model uss Missouri. Haha pretty sweet. I got some pictures so ill send em. Um. We went and played the piano at a funeral....well I just pressed the button....and the piano played itself. Anyways. That was neat.  We got to teach a few people who are progressing slowly but surely. It's been kind of fun. The guy we teach Moses said that my hair looks like Rocky Balboa. And I felt pretty good about that. But then I got a haircut so I guess not. Anyways. We got to go to Alexandria to do some more exchanges. We had a super fun pday down there too. Then we had district council again haha. Its been a mess with the holidays. Except the holidays just feel like normal days....kinda lame. But it's all good. Sorry it's a small one but I'm kinda tired...think I'll go home now. -Forrest Gump. -Elder Checketts

Ps scripture time: 2 Nephi 4: 17-20

17 Nevertheless, notwithstanding the great goodness of the Lord, in showing me his great and marvelous works, my heart exclaimeth: O wretched man that I am! Yea, my heart sorroweth because of my flesh; my soul grieveth because of mine iniquities.
18 I am encompassed about, because of the temptations and the sins which do so easily beset me.
19 And when I desire to rejoice, my heart groaneth because of my sins; nevertheless, I know in whom I have trusted.
20 My God hath been my support; he hath led me through mine afflictions in the wilderness; and he hath preserved me upon the waters of the great deep.

Nephi goes on and its dope but it's really cool to think that a great prophet like nephi had problems too ya know? Like we're all normal people in the end.
